Chapter 4- Call of the Wild




Objective: The student will be able to identify the conflicts faced by Buck in chapter 4 “Who Has Won to Mastership” through guided reading, annotation, class discussion and response to chapter questions and a graphic organizer.

Aim: How does Buck become the leader of the dog-sled team?

Do Now: What makes a person a good leader? What makes a bad leader?


Activity Directions:

  1. We will be answering the questions on the blue sheet that has been distributed.
  2. You will be broken into groups. Each group will be given one of the four questions. There will be two groups per question. You will only answer your question.
  3. Your groups answer will be put on posters for the class to see.
  4. While in groups EVERYONE is responsible for the work. Your roles are:
    • Presenter- you will present the information to the class
    • Writer for the poster- you will write the question and information on the poster
    • Timer- you will assist in keeping the group on track, helping with the poster, and critical thinking.
  5. Once you are finished, sit in your seats and review the posters around the room and begin to copy answers.

Groups and Questions


1 and 5 will be answering, "Why does Buck want to be the lead dog?"

2 and 6 will be answering, "How does Buck get the job as lead dog?"

3 and 7 will be answering, "How do the other dogs react to Buck as lead dog?"

4 and 8 will be answering, "How is Buck at his new job?"
